    Exterior and interior design

    Although larger than the 1 coupe, the 2 Series Coupe weighs no more than before. The car body is more aerodynamic with an aerodynamic drag coefficient of 0.29.

    Exactly as the new naming criterion wants, the new abbreviation also corresponds to a more specific design, which in some way detaches itself from the sedan with which the model is technically related. And indeed, this first generation of the 2 Series presents notable differences compared to the BMW F20 from which it derives.

    While retaining the classic 3-volume coupé-type bodywork configuration as in the 1 Series Coupé , the 2 Series , however, features less rough and more elegant features, with softer and less angular lines. This impression is also given by the larger dimensions of the car body, since the F22 is 108 mm longer than the old 1 Series Coupé.

    The front is perhaps the part that presents the greatest stylistic innovations, evident in the new design of the headlights (with integrated LED technology), which are thinner and more elaborate than the 3 and 5-door versions.

    These headlights, which still retain the classic split composition, take on a pointed design on the inside. Also present is the inevitable double kidney grille, which has always been typical of all BMW models.

    The lateral line is characterized by a distinctive body rib that rises behind the front axle and runs up into the rear fender giving a sporty dynamics to the sides. The flared wheel arches also emphasize the sportiness of the car body.

    The side is characterized by lateral ribs (just below the belt line and just above the sill area) aimed at giving greater dynamism to the overall view. Also evident is the very elongated bonnet, the short but distinct tail and the cockpit set back. The trend of the pavilion is arched and draws a lateral glass surface in the shape of a wedge, with the rear windows cut at the bottom by the classic Hofmeister elbow . The tail of the F22 , on the other hand, is the one that most retains a stylistic link with that of the model that preceded it, but the headlights are of a more modern design, similar to that of the 4 Series , although much less extended towards the center of the tail. .

    In the lower rear area, the integration between the bumper and the two exhaust pipes makes the vehicle visually lower on the road . The particularly sporty character of the BMW M235i is highlighted by a spoiler on the tailgate. This also has the function of downforce and downforce at the rear when traveling at high speeds .

    The rear lights consist of a single piece consisting of an inverted L-shaped red LED light beam.

    The passenger compartment retains the classic design of the most modern BMWs, with the dashboard facing the driver and the massive console equipped with the iDrive multimedia system knob. The improvements occur especially in the rear area, where the increase in the size of the car body has brought the greatest benefits: here, in fact, the rear passengers can have 21 millimeters more space in length.

    The front seats are slightly enveloping, and the dashboard is made up of superimposed layers of different materials (layering principle). The trunk has a capacity of 390 liters, which is 20 liters more than the 1 Series Coupé.

    Mechanics and engines

    The first generation of Series 2 takes up the mechanical basis of the contemporary Series 1, consisting of the F20 (5-door) and F21 (3-door) models. The chassis mechanics include a double-jointed front end with oscillating arms and a five-armed rear end. These components are all made of aluminum alloy to contain the weights and receive a specific calibration depending on the model. The braking system features discs on all four wheels, while the steering features an electromechanical servo control.

    At its debut the F22 is provided with three engines, two petrol and one diesel :

    • 220i, entry-level version of the initial range, equipped with a 1997 cm3 N20 engine with twin-scroll turbocharging and maximum power of 184 hp ;
      M235i xDrive , top version mechanically derived from the top of the Series 1 range, with four-wheel drive and equipped with the 2979 cm3 N55 6 -cylinder engine, also with twin-scroll turbocharging and with a maximum power of 326 HP;
    • 220d: diesel version powered by the N47 engine with a displacement of 1995 cm 3 and with a maximum power of 184 HP.

    The standard gearbox for all models is of the 6-speed manual type, but as an option it is possible to have an 8-speed Steptronic sequential automatic gearbox.
